I was working at Horsham Hospital today. It's next door to the fire station. Which is next door to the police station. If you call 999, every phone in the street rings. There's no better place to be set on fire by a mugger.

Today, however, the fire-fighters of Horsham were fanning the flames of publicity, and had this sign burning brightly on the kerb outside the station...

Never mind leaving your body to medical science, you can leave your car to West Sussex Fire Brigade. It's a hot idea which appeals to me. I've certainly owned a few vehicles that I'd like to see set alight at the roadside. At least, I'm presuming that's what they want to do with them. For all I know, they plan to use them as fire engines. Let's face it, anyone who can get my last Skoda across town in a hurry without being overcome by smoke, would be more than qualified to drive a Dennis.

Judging by the ones at my local fire station, they want to practice cutting them open.  They could save a fortune in training costs if someone just showed them how to use the door handle.

Hmm, and why shouldnt they cut things open?
Bit of local knowledge, but isn't the fire station's tower bigger, meatier and taller, than the church tower in those rural parts Dave?
Those men could use the handle but hey, flaming blow torches...

They do also set fire to them and any old chairs/settees you may wish to get rid of!!

Wish I'd known that last week 'old' friend, I've just got back from dumping giant armchairs at the quaintly titled 'Hill Top' recycling dump.  Do the fire service collect beds for combustion do you know?

I think there's a limit to their removal/rubbish collection services! Helps if you live near one of the training stations as they obviously need more furniture on which to practice.

I remember in Abergavenny a fully manned fire engine (complete with UV underlights!) turned up at 3am down the main street and picked up two of the firemen's girfriends from the nightclub.  Maybe they would have use for the beds...
